Broadacre City: Wright’s Vision for the American City

Part of the Frank Lloyd Wright and the American Landscape Lecture Series, this presentation features guest speaker Dr. Jennifer Gray, Vice President and Director of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation’s Taliesin Institute. In 1932, Frank Lloyd Wright unveiled an ambitious project called Broadacre City, which proposed radical changes to cities and how we live in them. Dr. Gray will unpack the ways that Broadacre City, though never built, was a vehicle to address pressing social, economic, and environmental issues, many of which have contemporary relevance.

As part of a four-part public lecture series commemorating America’s 250th, this program explores Wright’s architectural principles and how his ideas offer valuable lessons for contemporary issues surrounding housing, livable cities, sustainability, and social equity.

About the Speaker: Jennifer Gray is an art and architectural historian specializing in the relationships between social politics, material culture, and the built environment, with a particular interest in critical curatorial and preservation practices. She teaches in the Graduate School of Architecture, Preservation, and Planning at Columbia University. She recently curated two exhibitions on Frank Lloyd Wright, including a major retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art, and produced the accompanying catalogues. She holds a PhD from Columbia University.
